Foreword

Northern Ireland has an opportunity to strengthen how people affected by bleeding disorders contribute to the planning and delivery of healthcare.

While specialist clinical services continue to evolve, expectations around patient partnership have also changed. The Infected Blood Inquiry reinforced the importance of independent advocacy, meaningful patient involvement and sustained engagement with those affected by bleeding disorders.

Haemophilia NI believes this is the right time to establish the Bleeding Disorders Forum NI - a collaborative, patient-led partnership that brings together patients, clinicians, commissioners and government to improve services, strengthen communication and ensure that lived experience informs future healthcare decisions.

Building on the Legacy of the Infected Blood Inquiry

The Infected Blood Inquiry has highlighted the importance of independent advocacy, transparent communication and meaningful patient engagement. These principles extend beyond those directly affected by contaminated blood and provide an opportunity to strengthen patient partnership across the wider bleeding disorders community.

The Bleeding Disorders Forum NI will provide the infrastructure through which these principles can be embedded into service planning, policy development and continuous improvement across Northern Ireland.

Our Mission

Why This Matters

People living with bleeding disorders bring lived experience that complements clinical expertise.

Creating a structured mechanism for engagement will enable patients, clinicians and commissioners to work together more effectively, leading to better-informed decisions, improved services and stronger public confidence.

The Bleeding Disorders Forum NI will provide this sustainable mechanism for collaboration.

It will establish the infrastructure needed to ensure that people affected by bleeding disorders are consistently involved in shaping the services they use, while strengthening collaboration between patients, clinicians, commissioners and government.
